The weather this weekend was glorious, absolutely perfect. When it’s like this we love to start our weekend by taking the dogs downtown, eat our breakfast outside while people watching, and then heading over to our farmer’s market. There is a booth that always has dog biscuits and water. Let’s just say all the dogs that come know where to go. Those of us on the other end of the leash get pulled along! It’s this time of year that the market really comes into its own. Tables start to groan with all the veg. It is so beautiful with the range of colours. Usually my husband will hold the dogs at one end while I make my rounds so I took some pictures this time as I worked my way through.
I love it as most booths use organic methods and are small local farms. One farm has been off the grid since 1979! I also found out they only cultivate 1 out of 45 acres which surprised me as they sell a ton of food.
We also were able to get into the garden and harvest a ton of tomatoes. We planted 51 plants this year so I will be making a lot of sauce when it gets cooler. This is perhaps a third of what is growing currently. Of course I’ve been eating them off the vine as well. 🙂
Great pictures Virginia.
Thank you. 🙂
That’s a lot of tomatoes!!!
🙂
51 tomato plants!! So impressive. You have a tomato farm! You must be planning on making jars and jars of sauce. Lovely.
When it gets cooler yes that’s the plan!
Gorgeous colors!
Thanks!
You can’t beat the freshness of just picked vegetables from the Farmers’ Market. I have to resist buying too much. You are very fortunate to have such a great tomato crop. Whenever I try to grow them, the caterpillars get them.
Usually blight get them as well. But we use a bit of copper and that helps.
That’s a lot of tomato plants. Your photos are great! Don’t you just love the colors in the markets? Late summer early fall are my favorite months at farmers markets as everything is so vibrant.
It’s great this time of year because there is so much variety.
My weekend gets off on the wrong foot if I don’t get to the farmers market first thing Saturday morning. 51 tomato plants? That’s incredible!
We know what happens when you go to the farmer’s market! LOL
Home grown tomatoes are gems! And, you are supporting your local farmers too. Wonderful! Beautiful, colorful photographs! So, what are your plans for the tomatoes… other than for salads? 😛
I’ll be making sauce and some salsa. 🙂
That’s a lot of tomatoes. I don’t think I use a third of that for making salsa! I love Farmer’s markets and that is neat you can take your dogs. I wish we could here 🙂
You can’t take your dogs? Why?
You better start canning those tomatoes soon. 🙂 Have you tried tomato jam??? How about tomato sorbet??? Both of those are on my to-do list this summer. I’m thinking about a unique caprese dessert with tomato sorbet/granita, basil panna cotta and somehow blending mozzarella into it, perhaps as a cream. I’m still working on it conceptually. 🙂
You need burratta for that. 🙂 We freeze the tomatoes until it is cooler then I can the sauce.
Love the picture of the red onions…it has a very good look. I planted THREE tomato plants, for the first time, this year. I’m watching in wonder as the tomatoes appear:)
Thank you. 🙂 Aren’t fresh tomatoes wonderful? Good luck with your plants.
Hi Virginia, just popped over to let you know that your link to Food on Friday: Snacks & Treats was featured in my Need Some Inspiration? Series on Carole’s Chatter today. Cheers
Thank you so much! 🙂
That’s going to be a lot of work (with so many toms). But oh so worth it.
– Loving those littl’ summer squash. And such a shame they’re not for sale over here. Well, they’re probably on sale in London.
That was the first time I saw patty pan squash for sale at the market. They looked so pretty next to the kale.
